John Retallack:

Exhibition of Photographic Portraits

 

From February 7th through
March 1st of 2007,
Rochester-based photographer
John Retallack
will give a month-long exhibition
of two long-term photographic projects
at the Arts and Cultural Council gallery
at 277 N. Goodman St. by Village Gate
in Rochester, New York.

The series will include
'Colleagues: People in the Arts and Education'
and
'Residents of Monroe Community Hospital'.

Colleagues






















Colleagues: A collection of black & white photographs of artists and educators, many of whom teach or work at Rochester Institute of Technology. Others are from the Rochester community.



Says John Retallack: “In this project I am photographing people that I know personally or that I know by reputation. Because I am familiar with the sitters I often am looking for a certain expression or mannerism. Nonetheless discovery is always present. The photographs that please me most are the ones I feel are the most accurate characterizations of the sitters.”

Residents: John Retallack has been photographing at Monroe Community Hospital for the past 8 years. The photographs are color environmental portraits of people who live at Monroe Community Hospital and are cared for by the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers. All photographs have been made on the Monroe Community Hospital grounds.


“Most residents put a serious effort into finding some way to express their individuality. In producing a realistic portrait of them I work to create, at the same time, a portrait of the place.”



























Requirements
