center of the universe

by Anne Timm

i had some fish tonight,
                     and later,
                                     after a walk,

i sat at barnes & noble
                          with a book and had
                                     a cup
                                of apple cinnamon tea

                                and as i sat there
i thought about the infinite distances
                  stretching away from me like spokes,

                                equally endless
                                in every direction.

                  everyone, so small;
                  and at the same time,
                  the center of the universe.
