Two Poems

by Mary Ritchie

I

I am a creature of heaven
I belong in Heaven
with my creator
I fight on this dust
and suffer wounds
sharp steel cold and fire
hunger and silence
Servant
Prisoner
I bear the contrast of this situation
on earth

II

Standing over the city
before sunset
every cell is open
I cannot stray into another time
when I am so held in the galleries
I know you are here
I know these moments
may be my last chance

I search for you
In the cool of the day
